Chocolate for breakfast? YES! Sometimes I wake up craving savory eggs with avocado and kale, other times I wake up craving a green smoothie (seriously) and other times I just want anything and everything sweet and chocolatey. This smoothie is definitely the latter.
The recipe included Cacao, one of my favorite superfoods for its antioxidant properties and chocolate flavor. Epicatechin, the main flavonoid in cacao, boosts cognitive performance and can even put you in a better mood. Cacao beans, where cacao comes from, are also rich in nutrients such as iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium – all of which are essential to the diet – it’s not just about your macros (carbs, proteins, fats)… micronutrients are also super important.
I’ve also included Ashwagandha root extract in this smoothie as its know for boosting the immune system after illness, and also helps to reduce cortisol levels in your body – reducing stress and anxiety. I’m trying it out in my diet at the moment.
So, let’s get into the yummy part…
VEGAN | GLUTEN FREE | SUPERFOOD: CACAO
Protein powder (I use Pulsin Pea Protein), 1 TSP Cacao Powder, 1 TSP Ashwagandha Root, 1 Frozen Banana, 2 Dates, Almond Milk and Water. Ice too if you like it cold.
